The Carretera Austral covers over 1000kms through the mountainous evergreen and beech forests of central, western Patagonia. This is the area of most varied landscape, plant and animal life in the region. The famous Patagonian ice caps are also in this same area.
Coyhaique is the regional capital and is at the central point of the Carreterra Austral and the principal point of entrance for flights, land transport and boats via the neighbouring ports. From Coyhaique journeys of 1 days duration to visit glaciars, temperate rain forest, rivers lakes and the impressive local mountains. Hiking, boat and plane trips can also be made from here.

north and south of Coyhaique.
- Quelat national park, Quelat hanging glaciar and the cold jungle (temperate rain forest).
- Puyuhuapi hot springs on the Quelat fiord, sealion colonies and dolphin watching.
- Cerro Castillo (Castle Peak) national reserve with glaciars, crags and unique forests.
- General Carrera lake, second largest on the continent, unique turquiose water, fishing
and excursions.
- Rio Baker, the most voluminous river in Chile with the same unique turquiose water, great location for rafting.
