San Pedro de Atacama is the major tourist destination in the north of Chile. Situated at 2438 msnm this small village named after the Atacameño who were the original inhabitants of the area, hosts more tourists than locals as it is a cross roads. The gateway to Bolivia and the grand Salar de Uyuni. An access to the north of Argentina via Paso Jama or Paso Sico. Part of the ‘Gringo Trail’ though Chile.
San Pedro de Atacama also has its own attractions. The Salar de Atacama , a great salt lake, the Geysers of El Tatio, 4,200 msnm. A visit timed to be on the spot at 7am in the morning is best to see the geysers spout to their maximum height of 3 to 4m. Visit the thermal pools at Puritama or Death Valley and the Valley of the Moon unique natural formations at their best in the fading light around sunset. Both provide outdoor recreational opportunities for sand boarding, cycling and trekking or just a relaxing tour. The area surrounding San Pedro de Atacama is steeped in history dating back thousands of years.
A visit to the Archeological Museum R.P.Gustavo Le Page will introduce visitors to numerous objects gathered over years by this Jesuit Priest after whom the museum has been named
