...a South American city with a special character, Valparaíso is located on the central Chilean coast, at 33.5° latitude south, 120 km. to the northwest of Santiago.
This port, with 300.000 inhabitants, enjoys a Mediterranean climate. Its location by the pacific gives it a fresh breeze on hot summer days and also a wealth of fish and seafood.
Colourful houses are distributed over numerous hills, connected by winding streets and long stairways. This unique architectural inheritance has been declared an UNESCO World heritage site.
The downtown area is marked by a historical shopping and business centre. You will feel taken back centuries by dusty bookshops and cafes. Outside in the streets, you’ll find a vivid drift of street traders, fish and fruit sellers. With the funicular railways (ascensores) you can reach the upper town and the residential quarters of the city.
There are always new views over the sea to be enjoyed from public lookouts, from the palace of the “saltpetre baron” Baburizza or from “La Sebastiana” once home to the poet Pablo Neruda. This cultural capital of Chile offers numerous events like concerts, theatre, and poetry readings. Old port pubs, tango bars and Salsotheques enrich the nightlife. |
