Villarrica is a charming little town on the western shore of Lake Villarrica. At the far end of the lake the mighty volcano Villarrica dominates the spectacular scenery.
Villarrica is famous for wooden handicraft and furniture, there are markets all over town. There’s also a Ruca, an ancient house of the Mapuches in the market. In summer the locals sell handicraft, show traditional dances, and celebrate their ceremonies. On Mondays there’s a small cattle market where the huasos, the Chilean cowboys, sell their animals.
Villarrica is the perfect base for the independent traveller who wants to explore the surrounding area. Located only 30 minutes from Pucón, it’s best for those looking for a less touristy and quiet alternative off the beaten track.
Nevertheless all the main attractions are accessible from Villarrica as well:
- Climbing the active Volcano Villarrica
- Hiking Huerquehue and Villarrica National parks
- Mountainbiking at the foot of the volcano
- Fishing and family-rafting on the Tolten River
- Horsebackriding in the Huincacara area
- Natural Hot Springs
- Spectacular sunsets
